Jet Wolf's Top 100 Most Memorable "Sailor Moon" Moments Version 2.0 =================================================================== [Top 100 changed on Tuesday, 4 March 1997] 100. Witches 5 No More [JP] Episode #114 [SMS 25] The only reason that this isn't higher on the list is because I was more than aware of this jab at Eudial's death by Mimet long before actually getting to see it. But I found the other little "touches" by Mimet to be especially amusing ... Eudial's defaced picture on the wall, dead lillies wilting on her empty desk -- Somehow all these little petty jabs at Eudial made it easier to forget (and forgive) Mimet for being the cool, calculated murderess that she was (and isn't that for the best? I don't think I would've wanted to listen to anyone any less likeable singing "I Am Sailor Moon" ... I'm not even sure I wanted to listen to *Mimet* singing it.) 99. "Nice to meet you..." [JP] Episode #108 [SMS 19] This fairly average episode manages to save itself from obscurity thanks to the wonderful comedic sequences in it, the best of which would definately be the drunken Usagi's attempt at speaking English. (Although there's comedy in just about all the English spoken in this episode, especially when you listen to the supposed native speakers. Yeah, that old guy was fluent in English. Suuuure he was.) 98. Spies Like Us [JP] Episode #103 [SMS 14] One of the best episodes for comic relief, I got a big kick out of watching Rei trying to find the others. Or, more accurately, from watching the others continue to hide from Rei. Okay, so it was riddled with comedy cliches, I don't care, they worked. Felt sorry for the waitress, though ... 97. Droid Thunderclap [NA] Episode #58: Trouble Comes Thundering Down (laughing hysterically) I heard a sound file of Sailor Moon impersonating Droid Thunderclap before I actually got to see it. When I did see it, it was even funnier. One of those cases where, IMHO, the DiC version improved over the Japanese original. 96. Usagi and Minako [JP] Episode #92 [SMS 3] One of the first indications of a trend that persists even through Stars, there's something both amusing and cute whenever these two get on a roll. ("Nan desu ka?" "Desu ka!") 95. "Puu", huh? [JP] Episode #115 [SMS 26] There's something about Michiru that just seems to always have a joking and teasing air about her, and this is a perfect example. Appearing out of nowhere (which must also be one of the Outers hidden powers), Haruka and Michiru observe Chibi-Usa leaving after a conversation with Setsuna, the later addressing Pluto with Chibi's favoured "Puu" nickname. Just one of those short, good scenes that helps make the show so great. 94. Ami's Mind Warp [JP] Episode #80 [SMR 34] For some reason, Ami angsting episodes always stick with me very well. This one is no exception, as Ami struggles to break free of the Droid's control. Besides all of that, we get to see shots of some pretty evil looking Senshi, and Ami again slaps Usagi! (She's rivaling Rei-chan in abuse, I think...) 93. Mako the Protector [JP] Episode #80 [SMR 34] Some of the boys at school actually have the nerve to accuse Ami of cheating! And when Naru and Usagi stick up for her, the boys, under the influence of Dark Power of course, begin to close in and things are looking bleak. But out of nowhere comes a saviour ... It's scenes like this that remind me why I love Mako-chan so much. 92. Usagi's surrender[JP] The R Movie And it's scenes like this that make me gaze in wonder at how Usagi is able to feel as much as she does. Her heart is so huge .... The world would be a better place if people like her actually existed, ne? 91. Mako and her Sempai [JP or NA] Episode #49 [SMR 3] or 43: A Knight to Remember Even though we still don't know exactly what happened in this flashback of Mako's, it's quite clear that she's upset by his leaving. Something about an upset Mako-chan always gets to me. 90. Sailor Teleport [JP] Episode #45 While I still think the Senshi should use this for trips to Aruba and despite the fact that every time they teleport something bad happens, I adore this sequence. Cool animation, cool music, and property damage, what else do you need? 89. Usagi meets Luna [JP] Episode #1 Ahh yes, Sailor Moon, the simple story of a girl and her cat. What list of Sailor Moon Moments would be complete without a nod to the event that started it all? 88. Wiseman Revealed [JP] Episode #88 [SMR 42] Wicked cool skull with a Black Moon symbol engraved on it under the cloak. This is one frame that can really lead you to develop lots of strange and bizarre theories on the origin of the Black Moon Family. Hmmm. I smell a fanfic ... 87. Flashbacks to Crystal Tokyo [JP] Starting with Episode #73 [SMR #27] There's something I like about Crystal Tokyo and the Senshi of the future. I like thinking about them, I like fanfics set there, and I definately like seeing it. Is it comforting to see that our girls are still alive and kicking (and fantastically well-presevered for their ages)? Or to see that their friendship can last through over 1000 years of being together? Who knows? 86. The Senshi vs. the Snow Dancers [JP] The S Movie Yeah yeah, this is that other example of seeing the Senshi starting to attack without doing it, but it's not just that. I also happen to really like the animation sequence as a whole, but particularly when you see Ami getting trashed as the shot swoops into Mako trying to fend them off. (shrug) Hey, they're my most memorable moments, okay? 85. Minako plugging Sailor V stuff [JP] Episode #100 [SMS 11] Yet another fantastic Minako moment. Even now I'm laughing, and I think this scene always will make me laugh, even if only for Mako-chan lamely trying to get enthused. 84. First appearance of Esmeraude [JP] Episode #73 [SMR 27] I heard that laugh and suddenly found myself a new favourite villain since the death of DiC's Zoicite (and the fandub's Chronos ... grin) Perhaps I've gotten more attached to her now that I've been writing her dialogue, but I think I would've liked her anyway. The fact, is Esmeraude is a great villainess, even with a laugh that (almost) rivals Kodachi Kuno's. 83. Death Buster Twister [JP] Episode #117 [SMS 28] By the time this scene was finished, I had tears rolling down my cheeks. Mimet's chanting of, basically, "I think I can!", the seemingly leering Tomoe, the unenthusiastic farewell and then Tomoe deciding that he wants to play too ... It scenes like this that make the Death Busters so likeable -- they're just so silly when they're not being dangerous (and sometimes when they are). 82. Haruka and Uranus? [JP] Episode #102 [SMS 13] This was another of those episodes where I felt that the animation was simply horrid, but they need to be given credit for this scene. While going through a tunnel, Usagi glances over at Haruka, and is struck by the similaries between her and Uranus. The transition between the two images was so smooth and quick that it impressed me (although the consequence of this is that I feel as though Usagi had no right to look even remotely suprised when she discovered Uranus and Neptune's identities). 81. Little Hotaru [JP] Episode #125 [SMS 36] One word: Kawaii. Kids should not be allowed to be this cute. Especially not one that could destroy the world in a fit. 80. The crucifixion of the Senshi [JP] Episode #74 [SMR 28] A freaky scene, even though I knew it was coming. The only real problem that I had with it was how the Senshi showed no negative after effects. They looked like they'd gotten the stuffing beaten out of them in those crystal crosses, you'd think they might've ... I dunno, limped a bit or something when they got free. But a good scene, nevertheless. 79. Yuuichiro "saving" Rei [JP] Episode #38 The Japanese version just inches the DiC one out of the running, probably due more to a voice preference. This episode actually turned me into a bit of a Yuuichiro fan. You just can't help but like a guy so totally in love, a guy so ... stupid. 78. Eudial [JP] Episodes #103-111 [SMS 14-22] And I have finally found myself another favourite villainness. Eudial is like Zoicite, only more intelligent. She's like Esmeraude, only without the laugh. Things go wrong for Eudial, all the time. But whatever she does, she does it with style. Her own style, that is. 77. Zoicite [NA] Episode #27: Kitty Chaos I tried to just pick a scene in this episode, but I can't. Ahh yes, DiC's Zoicite, affectionately known in some circles as "That Psycho" ... Definately my favourite villain. This episode provided me with almost non-stop laughs from start to finish, due in a great part to Zoey's antics. 76. "Becoming an adult makes it more fun." [JP] The SuperS Movie When I first got my tape of the movie, I think I rewound this part dozens of times. "Look!" I cried, "she actually flustered Haruka!!" Although my viewing companion didn't seem to find it quite as funny as I did (maybe it was my rewinding it 20 times or so? Nahh.) 75. Ami's Heart Crystal [JP] Episode #98 [SMS 9] Yet another Ami-chan angst episode. I just felt so bad for the poor dear, especially when she was on that bridge ... (sniff) Incidentally, for those of you interested, this episode also contains one of those rare "Hey, Mamoru's not too bad" scenes. 74. Haruka's Detransformation [JP] Episode #115 [SMS 26] What makes this scene so cool? Probably because it's the only time in the entire series that we are able to see one of the other Senshi detransform. I imagine that this helped them get over their modesty *real* quick. 73. Rei's ultra Akuryou Taisan [JP] The R Movie Slug-like plant things animating the hordes of fallen bodies who start encroaching on the girls' personal space. Cool music comes up, the Senshi look horribly outnumbered ... And then my Rei-chan comes tearing down the street, ducking, doging, and using a guy as a springboard before taking them all down herself. Yeah, I liked that. 72. Introduction of Mako [JP or NA] Episode #25 or 21: Jupiter Comes Thundering In Kino Makoto, defender of the meek and loyal to the end. How can you not love a girl like that? 71. Darien breaks up with Serena [NA] Starting with Episode #55: The Cosmetic Caper The beginning of the series of episodes where I wanted little more than to have Darien become a real person and materialize in front of me so I could pound the stuffing out of him. Even eventually getting to see these episodes in Japanese, I didn't have as much hatred for Mamoru as for I do for Darien. .....But anyway. 70. Artemis giving flowers to Mina [JP] Episode #100 [SMS 11] A perfect end to that episode, and a nice chance to see Artemis doing something other than providing cheap laughs or yelling "Sailor Teleport!" 69. "The Three Lights!!" [JP] Episode #173 [Stars 7] It's almost entirely visual (except, perhaps, for Usagi's "Naninaninani?!?") and nothing short of hilarious. This is one of the only times when you'll hear me approving of a scene where our girls are fawning over the Starlights. 68. Endymion and the Outer Senshi [JP] Episode #117 [SMS 28] There actually seemed to be little point to this opening sequence -- I know that it had pretty much nothing to do with the episode. But that doesn't stop it from being really cool. The entire layout: the voice over, the art, the mood ... It all works. (Actually, loathe as I am to admit it, I like watching Mamoru interact with the Outers.) 67. "Uhh, do you mind??" [JP or NA] Episode #64 or 58: Trouble Comes Thundering Down Whether it's the quote above or a horrified "ECCHI!", this is just darned funny. 66. Daemons Runneth Over [JP] Episode #124 [SMS 35] These scenes, beginning in this episode and ending in the next, probably had more impact after watching the Senshi struggle for so long to keep the daemons at bay. The entire two-episode sequence was wonderfully done, from the endless stream of daemons pouring out of Mugen High to the Senshi being swept away under the force of the continued onslaught. 65. The death of Saphyr [JP] Episode #86 [SMR 40] Okay, so he was pretty stupid trying to smuggle something away from Wiseman, and even if he did whine "Oniisaaaan!" a little too much for my tastes, Saphyr's death was both sad and refreshingly different: He didn't die protecting anybody, he didn't really change anybody's mind about anything (as it took Wiseman threatening Serenity to make Demando snap). He just got caught doing something he shouldn't have and he was killed for it. When you toss in the added angst and characterization of Petz, you've got an excellent episode. 64. Rei's Fire Soul Bird [JP] Episode #54 [SMR 8] I saw the DiC episode first and wasn't overly impressed, despite the fact that it was a Rei-centered one. As it was one that was dubbed quite faithfully, I wasn't expecting too much out of the Japanese version. This is probably just as well, because I didn't get it -- except in Rei's new attack. If you've heard the "Fire Soul Bird", then you probably know what I mean, but if you haven't ... Let's just say that she sounds downright scary with her chant. I think I might understand even more where some parodies have gotten the idea of making Rei-chan demonic. 63. Hotaru's Classroom Flashback [JP] Episode #115 [SMS 26] For return visitors to my list, I expect that seeing this scene here is no surprise, as it's very much like another one that I have further along. But this one is different in more ways than just in character. Here, we see Hotaru actually reaching out, trying to help her classmates who obviously hate and fear her. The refuse to see all the good that she can do, only that they don't understand her and she's scary. Hotaru is probably one of the lonliest characters that I've ever seen, and you can't help but be touched by her dogged determination to not let these things affect her for the rest of her life. A strength that her phyical body could never give her. (And was I the only one that wanted to beat up on *these* snotty little punks too?) 62. Mako in Training [JP] Episode #105 [SMS 16] There were several things that I enjoyed about this episode, besides the obvious, that being that is centers on Mako-chan. I liked that the show finally addressed the feeling of uselessness that the other Senshi must feel at some time or another, never being able to destroy the daemon on their own. That kind of thing has got to be a constant kick in the pants for Protectors, to need rescuing by the Protectee. (Of course, this is the only time the issue is touched on, as far as I know, and it's forgotten once this episode is over, however I relished it while I could.) Also, on a somewhat deep level, I very much enjoyed getting to see how each of the girls sleep. No, really, did you notice? If you have the episode, go to the end of the pillow fight scene (another excellent sequence) and pause it. Just compare Usagi to Ami for starters .... Okay, look, I enjoy stuff like this. *ahem* Anyway, so there was that stuff, and then just the fact that Haruka and Michiru once again show up the girls. And it was nice to Haruka almost look female for a change. ^_- 61. Battle against Wiseman [JP] Episode #88 [SMR 42] Two words for why this is in my list: La Soldier. You can keep the battle itself; to me it's nothing more than the R Movie Take II with a dash of Beryl/Metallia (and not as nicely done as either of them), but that song ... That song is excellent. 60. Tomoe-sensei's Past [JP] Episode #120 [SMS 31] Villains with depth certainly aren't new to Sailor Moon. With many other shows (including lots of anime that I've seen), you are presented with a two-dimensional Bad Guy, some obscenely powerful obstacle that the Heroes have to defeat for the Good Of All. But the Bad Guys only ever seem to have one purpose in winning their battles: Power or Money or Random Destruction. Here, however, we are given undeniable proof that Professor Tomoe is not your average Bad Guy. Power, Money and Destruction mean nothing to him. Possession aside, he's in it only to save his little girl. Now these are the kind of villains that you can really sink your teeth into. 59. "Don't give up, Mako-chan!" [JP] Episode #97 [SMR 8] Another hysterical sequence that I fear words will not do justice to. Suffice it to say that it's worth the price of admission just for this wrist communicator scene. 58. Endymion's memory returned [JP] Episode #46 As with just about everything from both this epsiode and the one that preceeded it, I felt as though this was a very well done sequence. Yes, this Usagi and Mamoru "mush" actually managed to strike a chord with me. 57. The Prophecy [JP] Episode #90-119 [SMS 1-30] Before all of you who have seen SMS start groaning, no, this is not here just because it's something that centered around Rei. It's here because I adored seeing how this sequence grew and developed as the series did. I loved how Rei would get flashes of it without warning, and we would see that he Outers were having the same visions. It was a sense of consistancy that I find is frequently lacking in the show when it comes to details. Too often for my tastes are we presented with something that you feel is horribly important and should shape the events of future episodes, and yet it was just a gimmick for that singular appearace and is forgotten after that. The repeating of the vision was a refreshing change (even if it was stock footage). 56. Rei comforting Usagi [JP] Episode #86 [SMR 40] It's very difficult for me to say if this scene sticks out so much in my mind due to my own feelings on the Rei/Usagi relationship, or due to the fact that I had recently started conversing with a certain fanfic author about his take on the same relationship, which made me view this a little differently. (Damn you, Chris! ^_- ) But either way, I present this scene to all those who foolishly insist that Rei-chan is "just a bitch". So there. 55. Death of Rubeus [JP] Episode #74 [SMR 28] There can be no denying it, Rubeus was a slimeball. He deserved no pity, only the fate that he got. It's interesting, then, that I did feel sorry for him at his end, when he misinterprets what Esmeraude's appearance bodes for him. And you have to admit it, that was one heck of a final cry of his. 54. Tongue Wars [JP] Episode #43 Really, all of Usagi and Rei's "arguments" in this manner are great, but somehow the seiyuus managed to sound extra obnoxious in this episode. 53. Mars and Jupiter's confrontation [JP] Episode #43 One displays her love proudly, like a badge of honor. The other keeps her feelings hidden, sometimes so deeply that even she forgets that they're there. It's no wonder that someone as open and honest as Mako has trouble seeing past the defensive layers that Rei has built around herself. This episode, however, finally lets us get a definate peek through those barriers to the true feelings underneath. Hey, how could I not like seeing stuff like this? And we even get the added bonus of Jupiter shoving Mars against a tree. Fun for all! 52. Mako's life before Usagi [JP] The R Movie I'm not sure of the exact reason behind my empathy with Mako here. It could be because this glimpse into Mako's past strikes a familiar note or just because the ignorance of those around her infuriates me ... Possibly even both. 51. Dark Endymion [JP] Episode #46 He's tough, he's cool, he throws black roses ... Definately Mamoru's best incarnation. 50. The Senshi going to fight the Death Busters [JP] Episode #122 [SMS 33] This scene was probabaly as cliched as it can get, what with the long, solitary shadows, the setting sun, the faded profiles, the sad music ... But it all works. An excellent scene. 49. Usagi in the phone booth [JP or NA] Episode #61 or 55: The Cosmetic Caper Just look at that picture. Nothing else needs to be said. 48. Dead Scream [JP] Episode #167 [Stars 1] I agree, the appearance of this attack is odd and a bit out of place. But when I first heard Pluto's whispering voice and the really nifty swirling mists, I was highly impressed. That's stuck with me, and there are times even now when I'll rant and rave over the Dead Scream. 47. Ami's life before Usagi [JP] The R Movie There's no doubt about it, this flashback into Ami's past is one of the more heart-tugging things I've seen from this series. As if Ami doesn't usually look sad enough! And she's only one of the sweetest characters in existance .... Stupid people. 46. "He's a GIRL??" [JP] Episode #92 [SMS 3] Okay, so maybe you saw the joke coming a mile away if you already knew about Uranus, but that doesn't change the fact that the Super-Deformed Pyramid is funny. And we got an obligatory "sempai" reference too! 45. Rei's Fumbled Tackle [JP] Episode #170 [Stars 4] Eternal Sailor Moon, distraught over the abduction of Mamoru and Chibi-Usa's subsequent paradox problems, finds that she is now able to transform without the help of the others and she flies off. Rei notices what she's about to do, and makes a mad dash to catch Usagi before she leaves. It doesn't work, of course, but the instinctive sentiment behind her attempt was extremely touching (and pure Rei-chan). 44. Fiore's attack in the streets [JP] The R Movie Besides the fact that Fiore looks darned cool in that white suit of his, the calm music and his effortless trouncing of the Senshi adds up to an awesome atmosphere. (Anyone else wince when Jupiter hit that phone booth?) 43. The Three Sailor Stooges [NA] Episode #27: Kitty Chaos Pure comedy, through and through. One of my all-time favourite scenes. 42. Mina's finger [JP] Episode #66 [SMR 20] The build-up to this scene was so immense for me ... DiC teased us by leaving it in the "Sailor Says" (evil people), and I thought I was gonna die just from the little bits we could see there. When I was able to finally watch the scene in its entirety, I wasn't disappointed. If you think it looks chaotic, you haven't seen anything until you add in the audio. 41. Pluto stops time [JP] Episode #124 [SMS 35] What a place to put a commercial break, just when the Outers get obliterated in their helicopter! Upon our return, however, it seems as though Pluto has instead committed a very large no-no and frozen time, allowing Uranus and Neptune to be teleported to safety. The echoing and slightly distorted voices, coupled with the violently exploding background that doesn't move at all help make yet another excellent scene from this already fantastic episode. 40. Jupiter Oak Evolution [JP] Episode #169 [Stars 3] Again, you might be questioning the appearance of another bit of stock footage in my list, but my awe and wonder at seeing this fine bit of animation and a truly awesome attack haven't been matched by any other stock footage segment. You can keep your "Shining Aqua Illusion", I'll take this attack any day. 39. Usagi and Naru [JP] Episode #87 [SMR 41] When she was in the first season, I took her for granted. It wasn't until later, when she became "Naru the Plot Device" that I realized how much she added to the series. This discussion between two friends was very touching, and goes to show that, quite possibly, Naru is the only person in the Sailor Moon universe with the power of observation. 38. The destruction of the Moon Kingdom [JP] Episode #44 My only complaint with this episode was that we didn't get to see as much as I would've liked to. I acknowledge that there were only 25 minutes or so in the episode and that to be able to see as much I wanted to see would've required ... I dunno, a feature-length movie or something. But what we did see was still enough to leave a burning impression at the horror of the destruction of such beauty. 37. A friendly pat on the back? [JP] Episode #55 [SMR 9] Not from Mako-chan. This scene provided me with what is quite possible the single biggest laugh. DiC should be hung, drawn and quartered for denying us the humour here. 36. "Makenai!" [JP] Episode #98 [SMS 9] I think this is my all-time favourite Ami-chan scene. I just love watching her tease Sailor Moon. It's nice to be reminded that even Ami is human (before she brings studying up again, anyway). 35. The Slap [JP] Episode #101 [SMS 12] (evil grin) Usagi slaps Mamoru. You've all read this far into my list. Do I really need to explain why I loved this? (Oh, and the cheers were so long and loud ....) 34. Haruka's Past [JP] Episode #106 [SMS 17] I love back-story. It fleshes out a character, makes them more real and interesting. This episode gives us a look at how Uranus came to be, in a story told through Haruka's eyes. An episode that I'm sure is a favourite for anyone who is a fan of the Outer Senshi, as this is rare look at their shadowed and hidden past. And boy, if you thought that Haruka has a chip on her shoulder now, you should see her before Michiru gets to her! 33. Super Sailor Moon and baby Saturn [JP] Episode #125 [SMS 36] The animators were at the top of their form with this episode. The look in Sailor Moon's eyes is one that no one should ever have, let alone someone as pure and innocent as Usagi. It was a scene that required no dialogue, the picture said it all. 32. Black Lady [JP] Episode #85 [SMR 39] Chibi-Usa gone bad. Luna-P with Black Moon symbol. What more needs to be said? 31. Tux Puppet [JP] Episode #73 [SMR 27] I don't think there will every be a scene where I will like Mamoru more than in this one. One of the most kawaii things you can hope to see. I'm even of the opinion that if Darien had gotten the chance to do stuff like this, I might not dislike him so ... Maybe. 30. Introduction of Rei [NA] Episode #7: An Uncharmed Life When I was "told" to watch Sailor Moon, this episode was my first. I wasn't impressed. There were plot holes big enough to drive a bus through (pun only slightly intended), Serena's wailing was making my skin crawl, I thought the theme song was completely obnoxious ... And then I saw her. Classy outfit, cool paper-thingie with the writing on it, strong-willed and tempermental, pet birds, nifty attack ... Hey, maybe this series isn't so bad after all. 29. "Crisis Make Up!!" [JP] Episode #125 [SMS 36] Another that words can't do justice to. Yet one more shining example of how good these seiyuus are. Do yourself a favour and get a copy of this episode. You won't be sorry. 28. The Rose [JP] The R Movie And so we learn that their history together extends back even further in this lifetime. A very neat way to tie everything together ... And Chibi-Usagi is nothing short of precious. 27. Soldier for Love and Justice? [JP] Episode #102 [SMS 13] Usagi is cornered, helpless and alone, facing Kaolinite who has just discovered that Usagi is Sailor Moon. To perhaps make matters worse, Uranus and Neptune are also there, and they can hardly believe that this crybaby is who Kaolinite claims. But then, suddenly, from the shadows comes a voice giving Sailor Moon's trademark speech..... Yes, as probably most of us know, this is the episode where Minako impersonates Sailor Moon so that Usagi's identity remains a secret. The hilarity of this scene was heightened for me because I actually forgot that Minako did this, only remembering just before she revealed herself. I think my reaction was something similar to Usagi's just with a whole lot more laughing going on. This is another scene that a synopsis just can't possibly do justice to. 26. Rei's Heart Crystal [JP] Episode #90 [SMS 1] She's my favourite, how could this not be included in a list of my most memorable moments? Besides another excellent look at Rei, this episode sticks with me so well possibly because she's screaming in agony for almost half an episode (I guess the Death Busters refined their process later, it took about two seconds to get Mako's), and there's some good quality Usagi angst to boot. 25. "Love... I too..." [JP] Episode #45 When she wants to be (or, perhaps more accurately, when she *doesn't* want to be), Ami-chan is the funniest character. 24. "It is NOT a puppy!" [JP] Episode #127 [SMS 38] I watched the SMS series in an extrememely messed up order. My actual last "new" SMS episode was #121, the Tellu episode (and Gods was *that* a disappointment). I actually watched this episode months before I had watched the rest of S, and I can't say that anything much about it stood out to me. It all seemed too anticlimactic when compared to the arc before it (as it was supposed to -- these two episodes just wrapped up all the loose ends, after all). But last night, when I finally took it into my head to get this Top 100 updated finally, I rewatched this episode. I can't believe that I'd forgotten this scene! An excellent Rei/Usagi scene that slipped my mind! I'm sure to be punished for it later. But at any rate, when I rewatched it, I loved this scene. For those of you not in the know, the girls are holding a party for Chibi-Usa, who is about to return to the future. Usagi has made her a stuffed rabbit. Rei comes over and says "Oh, what a cute puppy!" Usagi, of course, gets mad and yells that it's a BUNNY, not a PUPPY. Rei apologizes, in her own way, making Usagi even more mad. Rei raises her hand, it looks as though she's going to slap Usagi ... and instead she gives her a band-aid for Usagi's finger that she hurt while sewing. "Oh, here, let me put it on for you..." Rei says, grabbing her hand, and then later whacks Usagi playfully on the head as Chibi-Usa looks on forelornly and wishes that she had a friendship like they did..... And my, but this is long, so I'll stop now. Summation: I liked it a lot. 23. "He shouldn't be riding that thing!" [NA] Episode #8: Nightmare in Dreamland I expect that I'm getting several bewildered looks now. This is found in my list because I think that it's the scene that turned me into a Sailor Moon fan (not Moonatic. It would take a while to get to that level). This will always be a favourite. 22. Minako's Heart Crystal [JP] Episode #109 [SMS 20] The only reason that this one isn't higher on my list is because I'd read the synopsis so many times before seeing it that it wasn't anywhere near as funny as it could have been ... but there's no denying it, this is still a riot. Once again, Minako at her insane best, running through town, with her heart crystal in hand yelling "I've got a pure heart! I've got a pure heart!" while the rest of the cast rush to catch up with her. And her attempts to get noticed by the Death Busters were classic. Toss in the final revelation of identities between the Inners and the Outers, and you get one heck of a good episode. 21. The formation of the ginzuishou [NA] Episode #30: A Crystal Clear Destiny Well, now I have seen the three episode arc, and yes, it does heighten the impact of this event, making sure that it hangs in the top 25. Emotions were certainly running high in these episodes .... I can't wait to get to finally see them in their original form. 20. Death of Neflyte [JP or NA] Episode #24 or 20: A Friend in Wolf's Clothing One of the few cases where DiC managed to keep the emotion in a scene. While this never seemed to affect me as much as I know it did some others, can be no denying that it sticks out, and helps to separate Sailor Moon from most other shows. 19. "Usagi!!!" [JP] Episode #51 [SMR 5] Tomizawa-san manages to convey sheer, unadulterated panic here. No one can scream Usagi's name quite like Rei can. 18. Returning to Earth the hard way [JP] The R Movie A great song, touching flashbacks, determined Usagi ... And a surprise ending. (At least for me.) 17. Uranus' break down [JP] Episode #125 [SMS 36] I just love being able to get to see behind that sturdy wall that Haruka hides herself behind. I'm not sure if anything could have hit home the magnitude of what is about to happen more than hearing Uranus' tear-soaked voice. 16. Destruction of Mistress Nine [JP] Episode #125 [SMS 36] We'd been watching the progressively schizophrenic Mistress Nine fighing a constant battle throughout this episode, one that she eventually loses. But if you're gonna go, this is definately the way to do it. Saturn's symbol bursting through the Death Buster's star as pictured above was very impressive. 15. Saturn Revealed [JP] Episode #119 [SMS 30] I hate to put two major Saturn-related events so close together, but this is how they lie, so there we go. How to explain the power in this scene? Finally, everyone present gets to see that Hotaru is, indeed, the reincarnation of Sailor Saturn. And what a powerful little thing she is at that. Saturn's theme music always helps to make whatever she's doing seem all the more surreal, as if just looking at daemons and pretty much obliterating them isn't enough. Quickly followed by the Outers immediate and unhesitating attack on Saturn, which she just stares at, completely unconcerned ... Wow. This is another episode that I urge fans to get for themselves, my words really don't do the scene justice. 14. Yet another bonding moment [JP] Episode #38 Usagi and Rei -- I love those two. This scene was just so ... Perfect. Heart warming, cute and even funny, this is characterization at its best. And who couldn't love Yuuichiro's entrance a few seconds later? 13. Ami's apology [JP] Episode #87 [SMR 41] In her own way, Ami hides her feelings as deeply as Rei and Haruka do, and as with them, I love seeing this side emerge. Ami's speech, while short, helped to perfectly impact the danger they were about to face. 12. The SuperS movie opening [JP] The SuperS Movie This movie has the distinct honour of being the only thing to date that has actually made me cry out "Kawaii!!" Sure, other stuff in this series has been cute, but this opening is downright precious. 11. Nurse Minako [JP] Episode #78 [SMR 32] Just take the whole episode and lump it into one huge moment. This is Minako at her best, and almost continuous laughs from start to finish. 10. Jupiter saving Serena [JP] Episode #171 [Stars 5] If I hadn't been a Mako fan before this episode, I would've become one after it. It is little more than Mako doing what she does best: Whatever her heart tells her to do. So simple to explain, and yet so hard for most of us to actually carry out. 9. The Senshi's abduction [JP] Episode #73 [SMR 27] The credit for my love of this scene must go to Mitsuishi Kotono. She has this uncanny ability to make it sound as though her heart has just been ripped out of her chest and spat on. And we bear witness to an almost violent outburst on Usagi's part! 8. Return of the Senshi [JP] Episode #46 I can't think of a single thing done wrong in this episode, only things done right. This is one of them. It was great to see a return to the simpler times of the first episode, even if only for a few minutes. 7. Pink Sugar Heart Attack! [JP] Episode #103 [SMS 14] Upon first viewing this "attack", I think that at least five minutes went by before I could regain control of myself and finish watching the episode. If you haven't seen Chibi-Moon's pitiful attempt to be useful (no offense intended to the Chibi-Moon fans out there, Hi Mark), then you are missing out on something sure to put a smile on your face every time you see it. And if you have seen it ... well, you know what I'm talking about. Although in the first couple of times she uses this attack, I'm still not sure what's funnier: The complete ineffectiveness of the attack itself, or the complete disinterest that the daemons show in her. ^_^ 6. The Outer Senshi [JP] Episode #167 [Stars 1] My first tape of Stars was only my fourth tape of Japanese Sailor Moon, and I got it very shortly after deciding that I was becoming obsessed, so why fight it? I had heard little more than the occassional reference or comment about the Outer Senshi, and was looking forward to getting to see them in action. This episode didn't disappoint me. From the beginning of the second half of this episode to the end of it I was enraptured (even if I was confused -- I didn't know what the heck was going on with that baby). 5. The death of Usagi [JP] The R Movie As I mentioned earlier, I didn't expect for one second that the ginzuishou would shatter. You can imagine, then, my shock and surprise when it did. Sad music again, a few more panicked "Usagi!"s from Tomizawa Michie, angst by the Inners and beautifully animated sequences all serve to make this a winner. 4. The Three Talismans [JP] Episodes #110-111 [SMS 21-22] Finally, the answer to the question that's been hovering over our heads since the first episode of this season: Who has the Talismans? Well, Eudial knows, and before long, so do Uranus and Neptune. Much to their surprise (although not to mine, and now, not to yours), it's them. These episodes have it all: humour, action, romance, drama, development, suspense -- You name it, and it's there. These episodes are absolute must-sees for fans of the show, and especially if you are fans of Uranus and Neptune. You're hard pushed to find better crafted episodes than these anywhere. 3. Defeat of Beryl/Metallia [JP] Episode #46 As far as I'm concerned, this is the Sailor Moon battle. There will never be another that will be able to either surpass or equal this one. 2. "It's not over." [JP] Episode #45 Sailor Mars, a Senshi that's pretty tough to kill. She was about to die, but Rei-chan was never one to let a little detail like that bother her, not when Usagi needs saving. There was onrushing death in those eyes ... even the youma knew it. It only lasted about 15 seconds, but those were some of the best 15 seconds ever. 1. Death of the Senshi [JP] Episode #45 Encompassing more than half of the best Sailor Moon episode that ever was or ever will be made, I doubt that any sequence in any other TV show will be able to match the emotion that ran through this one. I knew it was coming -- I had read the spoilers ahead of time. And I knew that the Senshi would come back in the end. Yet knowledge of both of these events did nothing to lessen its impact. From Mako turning back and seeing a battered "Motoki" to a wish that her Princess remain happy ... From Ami's lonely and unselfish sacrifice to the final use of her computer ... From Minako's leap to save Sailor Moon to a vengeful, shattering "Crescent Beam!" ... From Rei's final admittance of what is in her heart to a wish that she had listened to Usagi after all ... And finally, to Usagi's realization that even death cannot separate her from those she loves as she runs across the snow, determined to bring down the monster that caused all this pain ... It doesn't get any better than this. It is nothing short of brilliant.
