A perfect end to that episode, and a nice chance to see Artemis doing
something other than providing cheap laughs or yelling "Sailor Teleport!"
69. "The Three Lights!!" [JP]
Episode #173 [Stars 7]
It's almost entirely visual (except, perhaps, for Usagi's
"Naninaninani?!?") and nothing short of hilarious. This is one of the only times when you'll hear me approving of a scene where our girls are fawning over the Starlights.
68. Endymion and the Outer Senshi [JP]
Episode #117 [SMS 28]
There actually seemed to be little point to this opening sequence
-- I know that it had pretty much nothing to do with the episode. But that doesn't stop it from being really cool. The entire layout: the voice over, the art, the mood ... It all works. (Actually, loathe as I am to admit it, I like watching Mamoru interact with the Outers.)
67. "Uhh, do you mind??" [JP or NA]
Episode #64 or 58: Trouble Comes Thundering Down
Whether it's the quote above or a horrified "ECCHI!", this
is just darned funny.
66. Daemons Runneth Over [JP]
Episode #124 [SMS 35]
These scenes, beginning in this episode and ending in the next, probably had more impact after watching the Senshi struggle for so long to keep the daemons at bay. The entire two-episode sequence was wonderfully done, from the endless stream of daemons pouring out of Mugen High to the Senshi being swept away under the force of the continued onslaught.
65. The death of Saphyr [JP]
Episode #86 [SMR 40]
Okay, so he was pretty stupid trying to smuggle something away from
Wiseman, and even if he did whine "Oniisaaaan!" a little
too much for my tastes, Saphyr's death was both sad and refreshingly different: He didn't die protecting anybody, he didn't really change anybody's mind about anything (as it took Wiseman threatening Serenity to make Demando snap). He just got caught doing something he shouldn't have and he was killed for it. When you toss in the added angst and characterization of Petz, you've got an excellent episode.
64. Rei's Fire Soul Bird [JP]
Episode #54 [SMR 8]
I saw the DiC episode first and wasn't overly impressed, despite
the fact that it was a Rei-centered one. As it was one that was dubbed
quite faithfully, I wasn't expecting too much out of the Japanese version. This is probably just as well, because I didn't get it -- except in Rei's new attack. If you've heard the "Fire Soul Bird", then you probably know what I mean, but if you haven't ... Let's just say that she sounds downright scary with her chant. I think I might understand even more where some parodies have gotten the idea of making Rei-chan demonic.
For return visitors to my list, I expect that seeing this scene here
is no surprise, as it's very much like another one that I have further
along. But this one is different in more ways than just in character. Here, we see Hotaru actually reaching out, trying to help her classmates who obviously hate and fear her. They refuse to see all the good that she can do, only that they don't understand her and she's scary. Hotaru is probably one of the lonliest characters that I've ever seen, and you can't help but be touched by her dogged determination to not let these things affect her for the rest of her life. A strength that her phyical body could never give her.
(And was I the only one that wanted to beat up on these snotty
little punks too?)
62. Mako in Training [JP]
Episode #105 [SMS 16]
There were several things that I enjoyed about this episode, besides
the obvious, that being that is centers on Mako-chan. I liked that the
show finally addressed the feeling of uselessness that the other Senshi
must feel at some time or another, never being able to destroy the daemon on their own. That kind of thing has got to be a constant kick in the pants for Protectors, to need rescuing by the Protectee. (Of course, this is the only time the issue is touched on, as far as I know, and it's forgotten once this episode is over, however I relished it while I could.) Also, on a somewhat deep level, I very much enjoyed getting to see how each of the girls sleep. No, really, did you notice? If you have the episode, go to the end of the pillow fight scene (another excellent sequence) and pause it. Just compare Usagi to Ami for starters .... Okay, look, I enjoy stuff like this.
<ahem> Anyway, so there was that stuff, and then just the fact that Haruka and Michiru once again show up the girls. And it was nice to Haruka almost look female for a change. ^_-
61. Battle against Wiseman [JP]
Episode #88 [SMR 42]
Two words for why this is in my list: La Soldier.
You can keep the battle itself; to me it's nothing more than the
R Movie Take II with a dash of Beryl/Metallia (and not as nicely done as either of them), but that song ... That song is excellent.
